Is vaping bad for you ?

There are a lot of controversies when it comes to discussing how bad vapes are for you. If you ask several people how bad vaping is, you’ll find that their answers may range from “it’s not that bad” to “vaping is terrible”.
Of course, inhaling anything other than clean air isn’t usually good for you, but vaping is often marketed as a safe and healthier alternative to smoking. But how much truth is there to the idea that vaping is a healthier alternative to smoking? And how much do scientists really know about the consequences of vaping?

Is vaping less harmful than smoking?

As it turns out, vaping is generally considered a healthier alternative to smoking tobacco. E-cigarettes (or “vapes”), heat nicotine extracted from tobacco, along with flavoring additives, and other chemicals to create an aerosol that the user inhales.
While scientists don’t know exactly how many chemicals are in e-cigarettes, it is generally understood that there are far fewer toxic chemicals in e-cigarettes than in regular cigarettes, which contain about 7,000 of them.
This by no means makes the point that vaping isn’t bad for you, but it supports the idea that vaping may be a better alternative to smoking tobacco. Furthermore, it’s important to note that not all vapes and e-liquid (the solution that is vaporized in e-cigarettes) are the same.
Differences in vaping products are a cause for concern.
In the vape industry, there is a wide range of products. First of all, there are two main types of vapes: THC-containing e-cigarettes and nicotine vapes.
Vapes that contain THC (the main chemical in Cannabis that is responsible for feeling high), are considered to be more dangerous than their nicotine counterparts.
Although THC alone is not considered to be an extremely harmful chemical to the lungs, THC vapes often contain vitamin E acetate, which is used as a thickening agent. In February 2020, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) found 2,807 cases of e-cigarette or vaping use-associated lung injury (EVALI) and 68 deaths due to that condition. Vitamin E acetate was found in all of the lung fluid samples of EVALI patients examined by the CDC.
In addition to THC, there are other causes of concern for e-cigarettes. Most of the EVALI e-cigarette cases were tied to modified vaping devices or black market e-liquids. Basically, it means that vapes that are altered in any way after manufacturing or e-liquids that are purchased from a non-reputable source are a cause for considerable scrutiny.
Vaping is bad for your heart and lungs.
Nicotine is the primary substance in both cigarettes and e-cigarettes. It is a highly addictive and toxic substance. Nicotine raises the blood pressure of users and spikes their adrenaline. This increases the heart rate and puts users at a greater risk of having a heart attack.
Recent data reported by John Hopkins Medicine suggests that vaping increases your risk of developing asthma and other lung conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
E-cigarettes are just as (or more) addictive than traditional cigarettes.
Both e-cigarettes and regular cigarettes contain nicotine, which is the addictive chemical responsible for the “buzz”. Some research suggests that nicotine may be just as addictive as heroin or cocaine. Furthermore, e-cigarettes can be even more addictive than regular cigarettes.
Some vape cartridges contain nicotine in a much greater concentration than cigarettes do, meaning that users receive more nicotine faster by vaping than they would by smoking a cigarette.

Unknown risks

While initial research suggests that vaping is a better option than smoking tobacco, the research is not there to guarantee certainty of that statement. Scientists have decades of research into the harmful effects of smoking tobacco, whereas vaping is a relatively new and unstudied phenomenon. All of the chemicals associated with vaping and their long-term effects on health haven’t been studied enough to deliver any concrete results regarding the safety of vaping products.
Therefore, it’s probably best to steer clear of vaping if you can.
